The Butte

There are many hikes within a close distance to Anchorage. Many of these hikes would be perfect for a day trip from Anchorage with a more physical little activity. Plus, the benefit is the stunning view that it provides when you reach the top.

The other day we had some time to burn as we headed out on a day trip from Anchorage to the lake with family. So I thought the Butte would be a perfect time consumer.

The Butte is located north of Anchorage near Palmer, Alaska. It is 42 miles away, less than an hours drive making it perfect for a day trip or to add to a day trip outing.

The Butte is actual located on private property split by two families. Therefore, there are two routes to the top. Through my research the north trail is better maintained with stairs over a large portion. The south trail, the only one I have ever done, is dirt and rocks and a mostly a straight climb. The trail is roughly 1.5 mile and has an elevation of roughly 700 feet.

The north route appears to be doable by those with less hiking experience. This hike provides a fabulous view and is well worth the effort! To the east you can see the Knik Glacier and gorgeous mountains to the east and south. Plus there are some beautiful family farms below. The perspective that it gives is magnificent!

As I mentioned, I have only climbed this once before. It was also done when I had other plans. But due to the length, it was a great addition. Due to the location it is perfect to add to a larger day trip and other activities in the Matanuska Valley.

Hiking the Butte with little kids

Little #1 has never hiked a mountain. The closest would be a trail through town with little to no elevation gain. But why not give it a shot!

So we began our hike. I was carrying little #2 in my hiking pack (~30 lbs) plus a little extra weight. To be completely honest, I didn’t think we would complete the hike since little #1 was on his first hike. But, little #1 was a trooper. I had to beg him for breaks as he just kept on going. When he would stop and I would reach him he would tell me “mommy keep going!”

Ultimately, we didn’t make it to the top because of our prior arrangements. But if we had 20 more minutes we would have made it. Little #1 wanted to keep going but we needed to meet the family. This is definitely a hike we will do again later this summer on another gorgeous day!
